Obituary of Jo Ann Gladys Collins

Please share a memory of Jo Ann to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

On Sunday, August 21, 2022, Jo Ann G. Collins, a loving partner to George who left us too soon, went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ at age eighty-three, surrounded by family.   Jo Ann was an optimist gifted with seeing the best in others.   She was the fourth of eight children and attended St. Mary's Academy in Milwaukee, WI, where she became a "sister" in Christ to fellow students while learning and preparing to make a difference in the world.   During her "Milwaukee years," she began a life-long career in health care, first as a nurse's aide and then as an EKG Technologist and Cardiovascular Technician.   In 1976, Jo Ann and George, with family in tow, moved to Bellingham, WA, to begin a new chapter. In Bellingham, she continued working in health care,  advancing to a senior leadership role for Visiting Nurse Home Care. At Visiting Nurse, Jo Ann oversaw home-based patient care in three counties until she retired after twenty-plus years of service.

In addition to her work in health care, Jo Ann was active in various civic organizations throughout her life, including a founding member of Milwaukee Cub Scouts Pack 237, Bellingham Red Cross, American Arthritis Foundation,  Bellingham Blood Bank, and the Bellingham Emblem Club. During her time with the Emblem Club, she was proud to have served in numerous roles, including club president.   In the early 2000s, Jo Ann assisted with the development of the internet. She was also a member of Bellingham Church of the Assumption, Community Bible Fellowship and Northlake Church,  where she served in various roles including children's ministries and Vacation Bible Camps.

In 1959, George and Joann met on an arranged date with friends. The first night included memories of George drinking champagne from Joann's shoe and declaring he "would marry her one day."  Jo Ann described her life with George as "Rich and Happy."  They shared a love for family and friends and a lifetime of service to others. Jo Ann was also a gifted gardener earning awards and recognition over multiple years from Whatcom County in Bloom.

Jo Ann was preceded in death by her husband, George, and their daughter Tiffany.   She is survived by her children, Nancy and Mike McCullough Berg of Fond du Lac, WI; Steve and Rosemary Collins of Chicago, IL; Deborah and Roger Griffin of Milwaukee, WI; Brian and  Bev Collins of Bellingham, WA; Jamie and Jenny Collins of Ferndale, WA, Joey and Christine Collins of Everett, WA, sisters Carol Thompson and Mary Ann Bristor and host of grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
