Obituary of Herbert W Koester

Herbert Walter Koester was born June 6, 1940, in Scobey, Montana to Florence Hutchins and Walter Koester. Herb and his brother Fred enjoyed being "rough and tough" boys in Montana, surrounded by many Aunts, Uncles, and cousins. Herb graduated from Bitterroot High School in Missoula, Montana, and enlisted in the Army where he served for 2 years before transferring to the US Navy and becoming a medical corpsman. He was stationed in London, England when he met his wife, Hyacinth. They married on April 24, 1965, in Toronto, Canada before settling in the "States" - moving frequently to wherever Herb was stationed. He joined the UDT Seal Team and committed 20 years in the service of his county including 2 tours in Vietnam where he received a Purple Heart. He retired in 1978 at the rank of Senior Petty Chief Officer. He spent his civilian life living first in Spokane, WA before settling in Ferndale, WA in 1986. He worked at Arco/BP Cherry Point Refinery for 25 years where he cultivated many close friendships. He is survived by his wife, Hyacinth: brother, Fred Koester (wife Debbie); five children: Martinique Palta (husband Ash), Kurt Koester (wife Erica), Marc Koester; Natasha Gaskill (husband Nathan), Nicole Channel (husband Rocky); 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Herb was a "one of a kind" man. He enjoyed telling his life's stories. His daughter Natasha described him as "the man you always wanted to sit next to...so you would never be bored." He was loved by all those who had the pleasure to know him. He will be missed and remembered. A memorial mass will be held on Tuesday, November 16, 2021, at 9:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church 5781 Hendrickson Ave. Ferndale, WA.
