Joan Mitchell

Obituary of Joan A Mitchell

Joan Mitchell of Bellingham, Washington passed away peacefully on October 20th, 2021 due to complications of a rare blood vessel disease. She was born on November 3, 1946, in Bellingham, WA to Warner and Geraldine Shippy, deceased. She leaves behind a husband, Donald Mitchell, a sister Suzanne Johnson, a brother Warner Shippy Jr., an Aunt Betty Jean Constant, nieces Sande and Heather Harris, and nephews Bryan Johnson, and Mark and Mitchell Shippy. Joan graduated from Bellingham High school in 1964. She went on to get a degree in Music at the University of Washington and then later a Master’s in Accounting from the University of Hartford. She worked as an accountant for several companies for many years but also had a part-time singing career in local churches, and in the Seattle Opera Auxiliary chorus. She also had acting talent, and performed the lead in “Little Mary Sunshine.” Joan enjoyed playing the piano, and after retiring took up playing the guitar as well. She also liked to paint abstracts in oils. Traveling was important to her as well, with trips to the Ocean and many ski trips to Sun Valley especially. After marrying Don in 1973, they moved to the east coast for 3 years. They returned to Seattle after that, where they lived for many years until they moved back to Bellingham. “Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glint on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you wake in the morning hush, I am the swift, uplifting rush of quiet birds in circling flight. I am the soft starlight at night. Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there. I do not sleep.” (Indian Prayer from Seattle PI 4/1/80) We will all miss Joan so very much, with her excellent sense of humor and generous nature. She had a gentle soul, but with a tenacious streak. In lieu of flowers, we would request donations to CureHHT.org in her name.
