Obituary of Donald Jerome Lewis

Donald (Don) Jerome Lewis, age 68, of Bellingham, Washington passed away September 29, 2021 of a very aggressive lung cancer. Don was born on February 4, 1953 to Charles and Harumi Lewis. Because of his father’s Army career, Don lived in multiple places growing up starting at Fort Lewis, and then to Panama, North Chicago, Stuttgart, Germany, and ending where he began at Fort Lewis (now Joint Base Lewis–McChord). Don enjoyed many great adventures at each location and was excited about each move. But, after a military upbringing, Don was happy to permanently settle down in Bellingham after moving here to attend Western Washington University in the 1970’s. He met future wife Judy while scooping her ice cream when he worked at Rawls Deli and they married in 1979, recently celebrating 42 years of marriage. After several years of attending college, Don joined the Carpenters Union and achieved journeyman status. A back injury ended his carpentry career, after which he retrained to become a piping designer in the oil refining industry, a career he enjoyed very much, both the work and friendships made. Don worked for a number of local engineering firms over the years and retired only recently. Those of you who knew Don know he loved nothing more than a round of golf followed by drinks and rehashing the game. Most of his free time was spent golfing or watching it on TV, occasionally squeezing in some work in his large yard. In years past, Don loved coaching baseball for their son, Christopher, and passing on his love of baseball. Don was a Little League coach for quite a few years, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Don was preceded in death by his father, Charles. He is survived by his wife, Judy; son, Christopher (Christine); mother, Harumi; sister, Karen; brothers Tony (Pam), Charles (Gretchen), Michael (Karen); cousin Lisa (Derek); and many nieces and nephews. Please join us for a celebration of Don’s life at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club on Saturday, November 6 between 1:00 and 4:00 PM. If anyone wishes to make a donation in Don’s memory, please consider a donation to the Boys & Girls Club or a charity of your choice. Don’s talkativeness and candor will be dearly missed.
