Obituary of Richard John Zegers
Richard John Zegers was born on March 28, 1932, in Illinois to Evert and Helen Zegers. After relocating to Washington State with his parents, he graduated from Mt. Vernon High School. Upon moving to Southern California, Richard met Evelyn Rienstra, they were married on June 11, 1953, and enjoyed 64 years of marriage.
Richard served in the Army from 1951-1956, stationed in Alaska and on Norton Air Base in San Bernardino, CA. Richard and Evelyn settled in Redlands, CA, where they were blessed with four children. In 1965, the family moved to Whatcom County, Washington, where Richard worked for Mt. Baker Plywood and Georgia-Pacific before he began his 27-year career with the Bellingham Parks Department. Starting as a tractor driver, Richard earned his way into being the superintendent of the building department, a position he held until his retirement.
Richard lived life to the full, faithfully serving his Lord in all areas of life. He and Evelyn were active members of the Bellingham Christian Reformed Church and later, the Mountain View CRC in Lynden. After retiring, Rich and Evelyn traveled extensively throughout North America, especially enjoying the National Parks, as well as to Europe, Asia, and the Holy Land. They also enjoyed attending Whatcom Symphony Concerts. Retirement also provided Richard more time to pursue his hobbies, especially woodworking and gardening. When he and Evelyn moved to Spring Creek Retirement Home 5 years ago, they continued to thrive in their retirement years, participating in many of the activities. Recently, Richard used his love of God’s word and his singing talent to help lead a weekly Bible Study group and a worship service at Spring Creek.
On April 7, 2019, surrounded by his family, Richard passed into glory to be with his beloved Jesus whom he loved and faithfully served his entire life. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Evelyn, and his brother, Ken. He is survived by his brother, Vern, children, Bruce (Yvonne), Roger (Diana), Ron (Kathy) and Kathaleen McClary (Dean), seven grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren (two yet to be born this year). We miss him and his Godly example greatly, but look forward in faith to the time we will join him in our heavenly home with Jesus.
