Obituary of Barbara J McMillan

Please share a memory of Barbara to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Barbara (Horner) McMillan passed away peacefully February 28 after a short stay at Hospice House, Bellingham, WA.

Her life was full of friends, her three daughters, work and travels. Born in 1920 in Syracuse New York to Winifred (Martin) and Sylvester Joseph Horner, she grew up in the Tacoma area and called the Pacific Northwest (Seattle-Tacoma-Portland) her home. She was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Tacoma and started out as a beautician. She bought and sold cars on the side with a good eye for values in everything from Packards to Hondas.

As a young woman she climbed Mt. Hood in Oregon, then soon joined the WWII war effort winding armatures in Key West, Florida. Among her bookkeeping and senior clerk employers was the Washington State Department of Transportation, where she issued permits to truckers. She was an avid bridge player, and active in church before her hearing worsened. She traveled and enjoyed Europe, Taiwan, and Thailand, where she was delighted to ride an elephant.

She was fun-loving and always enjoyed returning to her beloved Oregon Coast for Horner-Wiebe family vacations. She was 98, and is survived by two daughters, Jean (Wiebe) Waight of Bellingham, Julie (Wiebe) Edwards of Akron, OH, sister-in-law Mary Horner of Portland, four grandchildren and seven great grand children. She was pre-deceased by her youngest daughter Rosemary (Wiebe) Reed, as well as sisters Eileen Dean, Peg Berry and a brother, Jack Horner.

No memorial service is planned. Memorials may be sent to Heifer International, or your favorite non-profit.
