Carol Reid “Lawechtelot” of Bellingham Washington died on February 19,2019. She was born June 23, 1915 in Matsqui, B.C. She was the oldest daughter of Frank and Ella Reid and is survived by four younger siblings, Sharon, Delores, Wilma and Norma. 9 others predeceased her. She is also survived by 5 of her children, Noland Murphy (Jane), of Stuart, Florida, Sandy Campion (Bud) of Camano Island, Washington, JoAnn Watson (Chris) of Palm City, Florida, Gary MacWilliams of Bellingham, Washington, Ricky MacWilliams (Debbie) of Birch Bay, Washington. She was predeceased by her son Ralph III and her husband Ralph II. She leaves 8 loving grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Carol graduated from Chemawa School and college in 1935. She achieved her Baccalaureate degree later on in Child Development and Behavioral studies. She retired from Lummi Tribal school and Nooksack Drug and Alcohol Treatment Program.
She was very proud and an active member of the Nooksack Indian Tribe. Her passion to learn and teach others about their Nooksack American Heritage defines her love for the Nooksack Nation. She was the oldest elder tribal member and partook in many tribal activities and shared many Pow Wows with her children and grandchildren.
Carol worked at Boeing during World War II as a quality control inspector. During her almost 104 years, Carol reinvented herself many times, from raising six children, grandchildren, moving to Connecticut, participating in local politics supporting equal rights for women, moving back to Washington State where she lived for the last 54 years of her life. After she graduated from Western Washington University, she used her education in Substance Abuse to help young people rehabilitate from addictions. Carol will be sorely missed by her family, her smile, her loving words and just being her.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Rosewood and Alderwood Park Health and Rehabilitation for their loving care during her later years.
A celebration of Carols Life will be held on March 1, 2019 at the Nooksack Community Center at 12 noon. Luncheon following, all are welcome.
